Waiting for Shinigami
Chapter 4 When Heero left, he had only spoken of anything to do with Preventers once more, and that was to say, "Come visit me soon. No pressure. I won't even tell Lady Une if you don't want me to," Duo had surprised himself by how quickly he had taken
Heero up on the offer. Somehow, there he was, unexpected and unannounced,
with nothing but a duffel bag standing outside the door to Heero's
apartment. There were several people inside when he arrived, and he
guessed it was one of the monthly dinners. He felt this had been confirmed
when, some time later, Sally, Wufei and Hilde exited the apartment
and got into a car together. A little while later, Quatre and Trowa
also came out the door, though they just walked a few When he was sure Heero was alone, Duo tapped on his door. It opened quickly and he was ushered in immediately, his things taken to the guest room by his gracious host. There was no mention of the unexpectedness of his visit, no reproach about the late hour, no hint that Heero was in any way inconvenienced by it. He seemed genuinely glad to see him. Without asking if Duo was hungry, Heero served him some of the leftovers from dinner. It was delicious. Once a month? Duo was going to drag Heero into the kitchen three times a day, at least. "Will you be staying long?" Heero asked he watched his friend eat. "I don't know. If you get sick of me before I leave, just let me know. I don't really have anywhere to be. I can stay here or go back, whatever," came the flippant reply. "Stay as long as you like," Heero said. "You can move in for all I care. It gets really quiet here at night." "With the way you snore? I doubt it," Duo smirked. "I snore? Since when?" Heero challenged. "I don't know since when, but I walked past your door one night while you were visiting, and I heard it." It wasn't really a snore, more like a purr, really, but it was close enough Duo didn't count it as a lie. "Next time, wake me up, will you? I'd like to hear it," Heero said with a smile. "Why did you want to come see me?" Duo asked, though to his own ears it sounded abrupt and terribly blunt. Yeah, nice way to work it into the conversation, Maxwell. Very subtle. Heero blinked and stared at him. Duo felt himself blush. "You said you came to see me because you wanted to, not to recruit me, but you never said why you wanted to come." An emotion that looked very much like regret crossed
over Heero's face, and he quickly began wiping nonexistent crumbs
from the tablecloth. "I'm so sorry, Duo. I know that, during
and even after the war, I was never really- there for you. I don't
know what you've been doing these past three years, or what your favorite
song is, but I know that you don't lie and you've never met a stranger.
I know what matters. I know what makes you the best friend I have,
and I know that those things don't easily change. It's been a long Duo didn't know what to say. He ate the food, feeling "moody" even though his mind rebelled against the word. After a long time, Heero spoke again. "I'm sorry, Duo. I'm sorry about so many things that I can't even begin to explain. I'm sorry about how many times I've failed you in so many ways, and I'm sorry I was cold to you. I don't have an excuse for any of it, except that I was afraid. You scared the hell out of me, Duo. You still do," "Why?" Duo's whole mind, his entire vocabulary, seemed to be that all-encompassing question. Why indeed. Heero shrugged. "I never gave a tinker's damn about anybody or anything except my next mission until I met you. You were the first person to ever make me want to laugh, and the first person to actually make me do it, though I made damn sure you didn't know about it at the time. You were my hope for humanity," Heero knew he wasn't doing justice to the meaning behind his words, but he didn't know what else to say. No, that was a lie. He did know what else to say, but he was no more ready to say it than Duo was to hear it. Sensing the necessity of a subject chance, Duo focused on the lingering scent of a cologne he believed to be Trowa's. "So, what's the situation with those guys?" he asked, jerking a thumb in the direction of Quatre's and Trowa's apartment. "Any progress?" Allowing and even grateful for the subject change, Heero rolled his eyes, nearly causing Duo to laugh. He'd never seen Heero do anything so very human before, and it seemed out of place. Abruptly the urge to snicker dissipated. There were a lot of things he'd never seen Heero do, and he wondered how long it would take to view them all. Heero didn't seem to notice his musings. "Those two are truly amazing. I knew Trowa was a talented acrobat, but the way he avoids dealing with his feelings for Quatre is an impressive, if sad, balancing act. And as for Quatre, I feel so sorry for him. He's so unhappy, but he really doesn't know why. He even talked to me about it a few days ago. I didn't really think it was my place to say anything, though. I don't want to be accused of matchmaking or putting ideas into anybody's head." Duo shook his head. "He's afraid. That's the only explanation. He would have figured it out by now if he wanted to. He's deliberately being dense. We may have to hit him in the head with something heavy. Meant with all the brotherly love in the world, of course," Heero snorted. "Of course. Did you have a particular something heavy in mind?" Duo thought about that for a minute. "Well, we might get accused of playing matchmaker, but I was thinking maybe the entire Paris Symphony Orchestra," "Hit them where they are weak," Heero mused. "Do you think their heads will be able to stand that kind of trauma?" "Oh, it might be touch and go for a while, but
anything worth having is," Duo said, smiling gently. He laughed Heero smiled, but he seemed serious when he said, "Yes, they do. I remind myself of that every day. Things change." ~ * ~ |
